Network Options - Advanced (Server)

Note: The advanced network settings pages allow more control over network settings, making it easier to mess things up!  We recommend using the standard network settings unless you need access to something specific that is not offered there.

The advanced network server configuration page allows more control over the Ascendis Caller ID server:

Offer call information on network

Lets other computers running Ascendis Caller ID as a client get call information from this machine.  (This option turns the computer into an Ascendis Caller ID server.)  Note that the following options will be disabled unless this is checked.

Port

Determines the TCP/IP port(s) that the Ascendis Caller ID server uses.  This number must be the same as the port number on the Ascendis Caller ID clients.  You shouldn't have to change this number unless another protocol on your network is already using the port(s).  More information on port usage can be found here.

Bind address

Specifies the IP address to use for machines with multiple IP addresses.  In most cases two addresses appear in the drop-down list: "0.0.0.0", and the IP address of the computer.  If multiple addresses appear (other than "0.0.0.0"), select the one on which you want to host the server, or "0.0.0.0" to host the server on all addresses.

The address "0.0.0.0" is special, as it refers to all addresses on the machine.  This should normally be selected.  When selected, you can access the server from the server machine by using the special addresses "localhost" and "127.0.0.1" as well as the machine's actual IP address.  (The addresses "localhost" and "127.0.0.1" are standard references for the local machine, and are not defined by Ascendis Caller ID.)  If you select a different IP address, then "localhost" and "127.0.0.1" will not work for accessing Ascendis Caller ID.
Machines with multiple addresses usually have multiple network interface cards (NICs), which access separate networks.  One might access the internet, for example, and the other the internal network.  In this case you must decide whether to make the server accessible to the internet or to the internal network, or both.

Server Type

Indicates the types of connections from Ascendis Caller ID clients that are allowed:

Real-time

Enables the real-time server.  See the Network Protocols topic for more information.

Polling

Enables the polling server.  See the Network Protocols topic for more information.

Both

Enables both the real-time and polling servers.

Username

Used for polling connections.  The same username must be specified for the network clients connecting to this machine via polling.  This is not used for real-time networking.

Password

Used for polling connections.  The same password must be specified for the network clients connecting to this machine via polling.  This is not used for real-time networking.

Forward network calls to network clients

Determines whether calls that are received over the network are relayed to network clients.  Normally this should not be checked.  If network clients are receiving multiple copies of calls, turn this off.  If you are chaining network servers, turn this on.  Ascendis Caller ID will not forward network calls that originated from the same machine.

Forward outgoing calls to network clients

Determines whether outgoing calls, when detected, are relayed to network clients.  This is only relevant for devices that can detect outgoing calls, such as Whozz Calling? devices.

Send contacts to network clients

Determines whether the contact associated with a call, if one exists, will be sent to network clients.  If the user on the network client computer changes the contacts in the network client's database, this could cause them to be overwritten with the server's contact information, depending on the client network settings.  Depending on how you use Ascendis Caller ID, this could be good or bad.

Send actions to network clients

Determines whether the action associate with a call will be sent to network clients.  If the user on the network client computer changes the actions in the network client's database, this could cause them to be overwritten with the server's action, depending on the client network settings.  Depending on how you use Ascendis Caller ID, this could be good or bad.

Server IP address

Indicates the IP address of this machine.  Enter this value in the Server address field of the clients.
