The best way to get caller id working on your modem is to use Ascendis Caller ID's Repair Modem feature. The following information is included for curious users.
Frequently, it seems, Windows does not properly enable the caller id feature on your modem. This is probably caused by using the wrong modem driver, or by using an incorrectly written modem driver. This can oftentimes be worked around by manually telling Windows to send the command to enable caller id whenever it initializes the modem. If you don't know the command your modem uses to enable caller id, you should perform the HyperTerminal test to determine it. If you don't have HyperTerminal installed you can follow these instructions multiple times until Caller ID works, trying a different modem command each time. The most common modem commands to enable caller id are:
#CID=1
%CCID=1
+VCID=1
#CC1
*ID1
Instructions for Enabling Caller ID on Your Modem
For Windows XP
1) Open the "Phone And Modem Options" control panel
2) Click the "Modems" tab
3) Select your modem in the list (if it is not already selected)
4) Click the "Properties" button
5) Click the "Advanced" tab
6) Type "#CID=1" into the "Extra initialization commands" edit box
Note: replace "#CID=1" with the command to enable caller id on your modem
Do not include the "AT" part of the command
Do not include the quotes
7) Click OK
8) Click OK
9) Shut down all programs using the modem, including Ascendis Caller ID, or just restart the computer
10) Start Ascendis Caller ID, and wait for a phone call
For Windows 98
1) Open the "Modems" control panel
2) Click the "General" tab (if not already showing)
3) Select your modem in the list (if it is not already selected)
4) Click the "Properties" button
5) Click the "Connection" tab
6) Click the "Advanced" button
7) Type "#CID=1" into the "Extra settings" edit box (without the quotes)
Note: replace "#CID=1" with the command to enable caller id on your modem
Do not include the "AT" part of the command
Do not include the quotes
8) Click OK
9) Click OK
10) Click OK
11) Shut down all programs using the modem, including Ascendis Caller ID, or just restart the computer
12) Start Ascendis Caller ID, and wait for a phone call
