Using a Zoom 3049C with Windows 7

Post by Bill Root »

Ascendis Caller ID 2.3 and later work well with the Zoom 3049C on Windows 7, but installing this serial modem may be non-obvious to people used to USB devices, which are auto-detected when connected and often require little driver assistance. These instructions should get Zoom 3049C + Windows 7 users up and running quickly.

If the modem is not already connected to the computer, shut down the computer and wait for it to power off. Then connect the modem to a serial port on the computer. Turn on the computer. Once Windows is booted, turn on the modem.

To add the Zoom 3049C modem to Windows 7:
1) Open the "Phone and Modem" control panel (this is easy to find if you view the control panel folder by "Small icons")
2) Click the "Modems" tab
3) Click the "Add" button
4) The "Add Hardware Wizard" window appears. Check the "Don't detect my modem" check box and click the "Next" button.
5) Under "Models", select "Standard 56000 bps Modem" and click the "Next" button
6) Select the correct serial port, and click the "Next" button
7) Click the "Finish" button

To configure Ascendis Caller ID to use the modem:
8) If Ascendis Caller ID is running, stop it using "Exit" on the "File" menu
9) Start Ascendis Caller ID
10) Open the Options window
11) Click the "Devices" tab
12) Select the modem
13) Click the "Properties" button
14) Make sure "Use this device" has a check mark next to it
15) Remove the check mark next to "Access through TAPI"
16) Click the "OK" button in the Device Properties window
17) Click the "OK" button in the Options window
