ESS Modem Issues

Post by Will »

Hi there!

I am currently having problems getting my ESS modem to work with Ascendis Caller ID. I have copy and pasted the modem output below.... any help would be greatly appreciated. I have tried changing my modem's INF file to try and get it to work with no success. I will also paste the section of the modem INF i changed to try and get it to work.

Thanks!

Will

Hi Will,

Another user reported the same problem, and we fixed it by adding some modem responses. Please see the next response.

Re: ESS Modem Issues

Post by Bill Root »

Here's an update on using ESS modems:

One or more drivers for ESS modems set the caller id responses incorrectly. This prevents Ascendis Caller ID (and any other TAPI caller id application) from receiving the caller information. Normally the Repair Modem feature of Ascendis Caller ID would detect and fix this. However, Ascendis Caller ID has a problem with ESS modems. We will attempt to locate an ESS modem so we can fix the "Repair Modem" problem. However, the incorrect caller id responses can be fixed manually.

If you're not comfortable with RegEdit, we can send a registry patch file with the fix if you send a Technical Support Report to us. To send a report, first start Ascendis Caller ID. Wait for an incoming call and let the phone ring at least twice. Then select "Technical Support Report" on the "Help" menu, and click the "Copy" button. Then start an email to support at ascendis dot com. Make the subject "ESS Modem Problem in Ascendis Caller ID". Paste the clipboard into the body of the message and send it. We will verify that the modem is receiving caller id messages and that Windows does not understand it because of the incorrect responses. Then we will send a registry patch file.

If you're comfortable with RegEdit, start it and locate the responses key for your modem. In Windows XP, this would be located in a key like [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Unimodem\DeviceSpecific\ESS ES56H-PI Data Fax Voice Modem::ESS Technology Inc::ESS\Responses]. Then add the following string values:

Code: Select all

"TIME="=hex:94,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
"NMBR="=hex:95,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
"NAME="=hex:96,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
"MESG="=hex:97,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
After making these changes, you must reboot your computer so that Windows will use the new responses.

We have verified the fix for one user, and it should work for the original poster (Will).

I had the same problem with my Pine Group 3621-2 modem. (ESS 2818 chipset) This fix you provided worked great!

Glad to hear it! :D

Would anyone who purchased an ESS modem (as opposed to getting it included with a computer) care to share where they bought it? We're having a hard time locating one for testing.

This info might no longer be required by you....but here it is:

I purchased my ESS modem at Staples Business Depot (in Canada). It was boxed under the name RetailPlus+ - http://www.retailplus.com/new%20html/Re ... _Modem.htm. They are part of the PINE Group - http://www.pinegroup.com/.

Hope this helps.

Hello Peter,

Thank you for the info. I haven't been able to find this at Staples in the US but I'm contacting the company to find out where I can purchase one. I appreciate your help!

Hi,

I'm trying to get caller id working with the same modem. We live in Australia and are joined with Telstra. Can the ESS ES56H-PI display phone numbers of callers without the ascendis software? For example in the same pop up as the one that asks whether you want to accept the call?

Can you provide a step by step guide on how to change the registry? I'm not sure I'm doing it correctly. Especially the code part of the instructions. The ESS help area isn't helpful and requires losts of complicated information.

What is the latest driver for this modem and do you have a link for it?

Thanks

Hello,

Any modem that Ascendis Caller ID works with can provide the caller's phone numbers without Ascendis Caller ID. At a minimum, however, you need some program that talks to the modem to receive the caller information and display it.

It sounds like your modem came with some modem-on-hold software. I would expect this to display the caller information, but I don't use modem-on-hold (nor do I know what software you're using) so I cannot say.

We don't recommend users change the registry unless they're familiar with it, since you can easily mess things up. Here is an article from PC Magazine about editing the registry safely:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1206503,00.asp

If you're using Ascendis Caller ID you can send a Technical Support Report to us and we'll try to send a registry patch file. To do this, run Ascendis Caller ID and wait until a call comes in when you're not already using the phone (Ascendis Caller ID does not work for modem-on-hold and the report will not include any useful information in that case). After the call, select "Technical Support Report" on the Help menu and then press the "Send" button.

As for the latest modem drivers, here is a link to a modem driver page on the ESS Technologies web site:

I can't vouch for the drivers and we accept no responsibility for them!

Hey,

When I am trying to send a Technical Support Report, and I am waiting for a call, should I be connected to the internet?

I am not a member of this forum and so how will you send a registry patch to me?

I've tried downloading the modem's driver from that site and when I try to install it, it says that my version is later.

What is modem-on-hold? Is it the thing that allows me to decide wether to answer a call when I am on the internet?

Thanks

If you use your modem to connect to the internet, then no. Otherwise it doesn't matter.

When you send a Technical Support Report, it actually just opens it in your email program. When you send it from your email program, I'll be able to reply with a registry patch, if I can figure out the problem.

In that case, keep your version.
