How about adding a Personal Phonebook. That way we could save some of the caller ID information directly to it!

We have plans to add the following fields to the Callers list: company, image, notes, and address. Is that what you had in mind?

Phone book

Post by Pauley »

Well, sort of. More like a Name; Address; phone number; cell phone number; and maybe a notes field. Then when a call comes in, the user would have an opportunity to export the caller ID information into the phonebook.

It would also be nice to be able to highlight a name in the phonebook and click a "dial" button and have it dial the number for you.

Phone book

Post by Bill Root »

That's an interesting idea. Right now the Callers list already contains the caller's name and phone number. When we add the address and notes fields, it will contain all the fields you suggested except the cell phone number field. Since the Callers list maps callers to phone numbers, I don't think adding additional phone numbers is a good idea. So, the Callers list will contain most of the elements of a phone book. I admit that it's not as easy-to-use as most PIMs.

My first thought is that a separate phone book would add too much complexity (from a user perspective, but also from a development perspective) to be worthwhile, especially given the number of address books that most people already have access to. I'll have to think on this one.

What I was thinking of was an address book within the CallerID program to work something like this...

a telephone call comes in and it is from John Doe, and his phone number is (555) 555-5555

I want to save his name and address in the addressbook (or phonebook). I click on a button to save his information into the addressbook.

Now I can go in the addressbook and put his street, city and state, email address and mayhbe some other pertenant information. Also, from within the addressbook, I could click on John Doe's name and have it dial his telephone number for me.

As a disabled vet, things like this would be helpful. Right now I use a seperate (free) address book (Borderline Address Book) from www.borderline.freeserve.co.uk but it is "only" and address book and dialer.

If CallerID could incorporate something like this, it would be awesome!!

Just my thoughts.

Ok, I think we're talking about basically the same thing. We have already planned on adding the address fields, although I can't give a date on when this will be available. At that time (or sooner) we'll look into adding dialing capability.

Thanks for your suggestions!

address book idea

Post by David »

It would also be pretty cool if a user could double click on a phone number either in an "address book" but also on the calls list.
That way when I come back to the computer and see somebody called while I was away I could just click on the number that came up with the call.

Dial from calls and callers

Post by Bill Root »

Good idea. We definitely will want to support dialing from the calls list as well as the callers list (or address book).

I just posted a new beta version that includes dialing support in the calls and callers lists. Right-click on a call or caller and select the dial command, or press CTRL-D. See the beta announcement for more details:
